Audiences expectations mean there
is always trepidation performing a recognised musical such as
Oliver! But Stage One Youth Theatre tackled it admirably under
Jacqui Ivemy's directorship. The production was carefully planned,
from the subtle touches of the costumed programme sellers
to the slick scene changes of the stunning set to the
well-choreographed ensemble numbers.
Music occasionally drowned out speech and the too quiet street
scene tableaux failed to create atmosphere, but the renditions
of Where is Love?, Pick a Pocket or Two and Reviewing the Situation
made up for it.
I cannot single out any of these fine young actors as
the whole cast achieved strong characterisations and
vocals which were consistent throughout the show.
This was a moving performance and the company
should be proud of it.
